THC cannabis drug crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of crystals of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, brown) on the surface of processed marijuana (blue green). THC is the main psychoactive substance found in the plant Cannabis sativa, which can be smoked to produce rapid, short-lived effects of relaxation and euphoria. Marijuana is an illegal drug in many countries, although a synthetic form of THC is used to treat various illnesses, such as MS (multiple sclerosis).

von Meyer’s (1867) composite illustration shows the Culmann ‘crane’ and sections of various human bones with stylized arching trabecular patterns. According to Rüttimann (1992, p. 14), the original figure legend reads: This graphic gives a modification of the curved crane that Prof. Culmann had designed [see Fig. 3 of the current study] under his control with the intention of approximately imitating the shape of the upper end of the femur and the transverse section of the neck and presuming the same wide strain as the head of the femur receives from the socket.

Koch used this femur drawing in his mathematical ‘confirmation’ of Wolff’s trajectory hypothesis in the context of stress transfer through this region. Note that there are subtle changes in the ‘slope’ (as shown by the bolded lines 2b and 3b as they course below the dotted line 2a) of some of the trajectories in Koch’s femur. In contrast to the load imposed on the “head” portion of the Culmann ‘crane’, which is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fixed end of this structure, the load on Koch’s femur course obliquely from the head to the center of the femoral condyles, and represent the vector of the predominant joint force. The trajectories or trabecular tracts that are indicated with bolded and dashed lines and labeled as 1(a,b), 2(a,b), and/or 3(a,b) (added here) were used in the present study. Human scabs serve as inspiration for new bandage to speed healing
Human scabs have become the model for development of an advanced wound dressing material that shows promise for speeding the healing process, scientists are reporting. Their study appears in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
Shutao Wang and colleagues explain that scabs are a perfect natural dressing material for wounds. In addition to preventing further bleeding, scabs protect against infection and recruit the new cells needed for healing. Existing bandages and other dressings for wounds generally are intended to prevent bleeding and infections. Wang’s team set out to develop a new generation of wound dressings that reduce the risk of infections while speeding the healing process.

 an homage to one of the oldest extant concrete structures, is comprised of 196 unique 3D printed cement polymer components. Each component is held in compression to create a structural network of individual masonry polymer blocks, each with a compressive strength of 1800psi.

Woodskin: The Flexible Timber Skin
Have you ever wanted to create delicate, complex shapes from plywood, but can’t because it’s too stiff and unforgiving? Well all that might soon change, thanks to Milan-based design studio MammaFotogramma. They have created a type of flexible, ‘Woodskin‘ triangular tiles of Russian plywood.
Woodskin originated from a submission the studio made to open source design competition, Autoprogettazione 2.0. Inspired by the potential they saw in the material, team-members Giulio Masotti and Gianluca Lo Presti incorporated the material into the design of a rock-climbing gym in Montreal, which they were working on. However, while the material was there in concept, the exact manufacturing technique had still to be worked out. To do this, the two moved to Montreal and lived near the site of the gym, so they could experiment with different materials and compounds to perfect the design. The result is a sheet of Russian plywood, routed into a series of a series of triangular tiles, held together by a vinyl mesh.

Japanese artist Hideki Tokushige states that the collection, called “Honebana” (bone flower), is the result of a ceremonial process that honors the cycle of death, decay, and rebirth, even as modern society becomes increasingly detached from this spiritual reality.
